Koldioxid
Carbon dioxide. Here we have one carbon and two oxygens in every molecule. In the air we have 0,037% of that gas. Carbon dioxide is never flammable, and it has to do with the chemical bonding where we already have two oxygens in the molecule, and you can’t put in even more. Therefor a combustion and a fire will not occur. This gas is not poisonous and is a vital component of our atmosphere. However, carbon dioxide poisoning can occur if we breath in high concentrations of it, like if a storage tube leaks at a pharmaceutical industry.
Carbon Dioxide’s chemical structure
This molecule is made of one part carbon, and twice as many parts’ oxygen. There are double bonds in every oxygen-carbon connection, and the carbon is in the middle. Still, the oxygen in that complex is not fully satisfied, and there are free electrons circulating around both oxygens and they don’t have anything to attach to. This structure makes the molecule nonpolar, and we only see a linear structure where there is not any unbalance in electron-sharing. This is a greenhouse gas that we easily get when a combustion of anything occurs, and with carbon dioxide in the air we trap the nearest stars energy.
(ethanol) C2H6O + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O
Above we see a combustion of ethanol. The carbon dioxide that became the product, will now absorb a great part of the infrared radiation that the earth radiates to cool down, after all light and warmth coming from the sun. All of the greenhouse gases will do this with the infrared radiation, and then they will send it away in all directions. That part of the radiation in question that will end up in space will not do any harm, but that portion that will be thrown back to earth will result in a higher temperature and give us global warming. Here is the photosynthesis and the process when CO2 is being converted:
6 CO2 + 6 H2O ---> (glucose) C6H12O6 + 6 O2
Carbon dioxide and risks
This gas may explode if it´s warmed up. It’s not flammable, but it can suffocate you. In some cases, it’s causing frostbite, which is freezing - prickling sensation/feeling of needles, and violet skin. No carcinogenicity.
Long-term exposures are not harmful though. Vague irritation of the eyes can happen. A person can start feeling depressed and starts to breath rapidly when the concentr. of the gas goes up. Too much cause nausea and death.
